Meet The Producer
Ben Liebrand
Getting a cassette recorder at the age of 12 kicked off Ben’s love for music and technology.
Filling in an hour for the local DJ, so the barkeeper would at least stop wrecking the styluses, got him his first gig in 1978.
In 1980, the KK-Club opened with Ben spinning 7 nights a week for 5 months. This cemented his vinyl skills on the SL1200mk2 decks that he bought in a hardware store amongst the fridges and the toasters (based on the decks having a fader for pitch, which just had to be handy right?!).
Ben states that being an Audio Nerd helped him tremendously in successfully tackling the opportunities that were presented to him over the years. Doing his first official edits and remixes in 1982, including a top 5 hit with Forrest – ‘Rock The Boat’ in that same year, and starting the first non-stop mixed radio show on Dutch radio in 1983. This show and the yearly Grandmixes became an inspiration to many guys wanting to get into mixing, such as Ferry Corsten, Tiësto and Armin van Buuren. A second radio show called the Minimix spawned a whole series of remixes being released officially on DMC or both.
Ben added Artwork, Visuals and 3D Computer Graphics to his list of ‘hobbies’ turning in to ‘work’, always aiming for the highest quality in each.
In 1999, The Grandmixes started to be released officially in a long running partnership with Sony resulting in over 30 3 hour mixes.
Grand 12 Inches is a series added soon after, preserving our beloved 12″ versions in master quality.
Ben has released 2 albums under his own name, ‘Styles’ in 1990 and ‘Iconic Groove’ in 2015.
Currently Ben continues his full hour shows ‘In The Mix’ as well as the new show ‘In The House’ – and brought his weekly ‘Minimix’ to yet a next level.
He was awarded the highest recognition from the Dutch Music Industry in 2020, The Golden Harp. It was presented to him by Armin van Buuren for his influence on the Dutch Music Industry with regards to the development of Dance Music.
